The Cayman Islands Cancer Society’s Christmas cards this year celebrate both the festive season and the opening of the new Chemotherapy Unit.
The cards feature prints of photographs that hang on the walls of the Chemotherapy Unit. The photos were donated by Cancer Registrar Amanda Nicholson, who is an artist and photographer in her spare time.
“Our cards are not typically Christmassy this year,” said Jennifer Weber, operations manager of the Cancer Society. “People seem to be intrigued by them because they have Cayman seascapes instead of the usual holiday images on the front. People wonder how seascapes, cancer, chemo units and Christmas cards all tie together, but as soon as they read the back of the cards, they understand; because we hear them murmur, ‘Awwwww’ and ‘That’s so nice’ or ‘Now I feel inspired.’
“I personally love these cards because they are unique to Cayman, the Cancer Society and this point in time.”
The cards, sold in packs of 12 for $12, feature three different images — four of each design. The images are named Faith, Hope and Love. Each card includes an explanation on the back, as well as an artist’s small rendering of the Chemotherapy Unit.
The unit opened in July when the Cancer Society completed a project to build a new chemotherapy facility in a building formerly occupied by the Lighthouse School.
Explaining the choice of the images to adorn the walls of the unit, Ms. Weber said, “We wanted some special art work for the Chemo Unit that would be unique to Cayman, that would help people feel comfortable, relaxed and at home, so her photos were a perfect choice for the space.” “The photos are done on stretched canvas and look lovely hanging on the walls. Amanda and another anonymous donor paid to have them enlarged and framed in memory of some loved ones who passed away from cancer,” she added.
The proceeds from the sale of the cards will go toward the ongoing costs of the new Chemotherapy Unit.
The cards are available, while supplies last, at the Cancer Society office at 114 Maple Road, in front of the Cayman Islands Hospital.
