HISTORY

The Society had it's beginnings back in 1982 when Mrs. Hilma McField (a cancer patient) formed "Women Helping Women". In 1986, Alister (Alex) Alexander (another cancer patient) was interested in forming a cancer support group. He approached Mrs. McField and they agreed to merge the two groups. In March 1988, we officially became the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, a voluntary organization established to help cancer patients and their families/supporters.

The Society has come a long way since it's early beginnings and as the need for cancer information and support services increases, so we need to continue and expand our efforts to better serve the community.

Coordinated efforts over the years have resulted in tremendous support of the medical community, government leaders and the public. Since beginning our education campaigns and information service, we now continually receive requests for programmes, cancer information and research. In addition, by adding the Internet research we now receive requests for research information by physicians and other medical personnel, which results in our increased ability to provide the latest information on a wide range of topics. Continual updating of our audio and video library has been a tremendous help to patients, families, cancer programmes and schools.
